The Man, The Myth, The Legend, September 28, 2006
By Bobby McGee (Athens, Ga)

Rick Chavez is without a doubt the best Latin/Jazz guitarist I have ever heard. The sound of his guitar reminds me of how the sirens called to Ulysses. Unfortunately, I don't have wax to put into my friend's ears, so they became transfixed as well. Dang Tequila Bar! We have all been trapped in the womb of his relaxing congo samba beats and mellow melodies. And this is a womb we don't try to leave!!!When I close my eyes and listen to Rick, my mind dances and flirts with the temptress that is Rick's guitar. I follow the sound as it travels up, down, then, incredibly, hugs me like a warm blanket right out of the dryer. Don't debate buying this, take it from NIKE and Just Do It.

Guitarist ~ Rick Chavez ~ is a local Las Vegas favorite, that
continues to crank out some of the best guitar riffs around at places like
the Mirage, Luxor, and Sam's Town. Rick has his own unique style...,
which is what happens when music is genuinely played from the heart.
~ ~ ~
Listen closely, enjoy, and you will be transported to a state of wellness..,
a soul cleansing, if you will, as he effortlessly and smoothly moves through his
craft. As his music flows... you have an eerie sense, almost like he has left
us behind, and moved to another musical plane...
~ ~ ~
Listen, and names like Stevie Ray, Buddy Guy, Coco Montoya, quickly come
to mind; as you continue to listen, you notice that there is something different..,
some "thing" just off center in Chavez's technique.., an underlying tone
of uneasiness, an exciting spontaneity, that surfaces and
hungers for control...
~ ~ ~
Perhaps it's "Duende" which embraced
flamenco guitarists of the past, and continues to hold them to this day...
It certainly influences and contributes to his unique style.

In 2001 Rick was one of the recipients of the
The Prestigious "DUENDE" Award, for best New Guitarist 2001. The event was
sponsored by The Las Vegas Flamenco Society~ and the Honorary Awards Presenter for the evening was
Polly Gonzalez. a Las Vegas favorite, community activist, television personality and news anchor.

The
" DUENDE "
acknowledges Flamenco Excellence in Las Vegas.

Rick Chavez - Calor

By: Michael Allison (Associate Writer)

Artist: Rick Chavez
Title: Calor

Rick Chavez has one very interesting style of music here. His jazz fusion, Latin drenched mixture is simply amazing and very pleasing to the ears. I have to say that I truly enjoyed this album. The music is upbeat and very warm. Rick's compositions have a certain charm to them that is very attractive. The mixture of the Latin grooves with the jazz gives the music a happier feel. It's not often that I hear compositions of this quality. Especially with a somewhat experimental style like this. This is definitely music that has been worked and reworked over and over. The complexity and overall beauty of the music on this album is not something that one creates in ten minutes. Rick has spent the last 35 years working on this amazing sound and style. His hard work and commitment has definitely paid off. You're simply not going to find a better instrumental jazz album out there.
